erythropoetin

Erythrocytes are continuously produced in the red bone marrow of large bones and matures in about 7 days with a functional life of 100-120 days.

Erythropoetin which is produced by the peritubular capillary endothelial cells in the kidney and liver is a glycoprotein hormone that controls erythropoiesis, plays a role in the brain's response to neuronal injury and is also involved in the wound healing process.

Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) act as transcription factors for EPO.
